Frogs Are Not Toys Campaign

Froggy's Lair "biospheres" are a SERIOUS welfare concern. We are working to have these products (and any similar future products) changed to meet ethical standards and address public health concerns, or to be discontinued altogether.

●  African Dwarf frogs are very active animals and LOVE to swim. They can swim up to four miles-per-hour, and should have the space to be able to do so. Petco recommends a ten gallon tank or larger for them; in comparison, Froggy’s Lair’s largest setup offered is a one gallon tank. (viahttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/African_dwarf_frog ,https://www.petco.com/content/petco/PetcoStore/en_US/pet-services/reso urce-center/caresheets/african-dwarf-frog.html and https://froggyslair.com/)

●  A healthy aquarium requires consistent monitoring of different chemical levels. PH, carbonate hardness, general hardness, salinity, ammonia, nitrite and nitrate levels all have to be routinely checked and managed.  African Dwarf frogs require a tank temperature between 72 and 78 degrees fahrenheit, so their setup should have a heater to maintain this range. Froggy’s Lair does not provide any heat source with their setups

despite having hundreds of retailers in states that can get below freezing. (via https://reptilesmagazine.com/caring-for-the-african-dwarf-frog/)

It is recommended to feed this species daily when they’re under a year old, and the frogs sold by Froggy’s Lair are supposedly six months old; they recommend feeding them 2 to 3 times a week, which is still less than the recommended adult feeding schedule of every other day that they would be on after just six months of ownership if the company’s claim regarding the frogs’ ages is correct.  These frogs are omnivores, and thrive on a diet of bloodworms, blackworms, brine shrimp, mysis shrimp, daphnia and tubifex worms. Pellets, like Froggy’s Lair provides consumers with, are not recommended for them as they break down quickly, sometimes too quick for the frog to eat and this also adds unnecessary waste to the tank.  The “year supply” of pellets Froggy’s Lair provides contain unnecessary, cheap filler ingredients such as soy flour, ground corn and corn gluten meal. Soy is known for its high protein and fiber contents, and corn contains low-quality protein lacking in essential amino acids. These ingredients are being used in this situation to boost the percentage of protein content in the diet that they sell.  If a child (or otherwise) follows their natural inclination to touch their pet frogs, they could be exposed to harmful diseases such as salmonella and mycobacterium. (viahttps://www.cdc.gov/salmonella/2011/water-frog-7-20-2011.html andhttps://veterinarypartner.vin.com/default.aspx?pid=19239&catId=102919&i d=8148467)

●  If these frogs are released into a random ecosystem, they could also spread a disease called Chytridiomycosis to native amphibians which

could decimate their populations. (viahttps://www.environment.nsw.gov.au/topics/animals-and-plants/native-anim als/native-animal-facts/frogs/threats-to-frogs/frog-chytrid-fungus)

●  While African dwarf frogs can breathe at the surface in a process called “burbling”, this does not mean that they shouldn’t have any aeration. Primarily, African dwarf frogs breathe through their skin via their cutaneous respiration gland. Bubbles produced by air stones and filters help provide them with oxygen-rich water, decreasing stress on their lungs. ●  Bioactive sand does not replace a proper nitrogen cycle like Froggy’s Lair claims. (via https://www.calicocreekfeedandpets.net/aquatics-fish andhttps://www.thesprucepets.com/nitrogen-cycle-understanding-1380724)
